Baklava-Inspired Apple + Orange Filo Tart
This is the kind of dessert that looks impressive but is surprisingly simple to make. We layer crisp, golden filo pastry with spiced apples and a generous scattering of nuts, all finished with a drizzle of orange syrup.
Ingredients
Ingredients:
- mixed nuts, we use pistachios, almonds, pecans
- caster sugar
- Pink Lady apples
- maple syrup
- orange zest
- orange juice
- ground cinnamon
- filo pastry
- olive oil, for brushing
- vegan cream or vanilla ice cream, to serve (optional)
Method
- 1
Preheat the oven to 180°C fan / 200°C / gas 6.
- 2
Finely chop the nuts and add them to a mixing bowl with the caster sugar. Stir to combine.
- 3
Quarter and core the apples, then thinly slice them to about 3mm thick. Transfer to a bowl with the maple syrup, orange zest, orange juice and cinnamon. Toss until the apples are evenly coated, then set aside, keeping any syrup left in the bowl.
- 4
Lay one sheet of filo pastry on a lined, large baking tray and brush lightly with olive oil. Place two more sheets on top, brushing each one with oil as you go.
- 5
Sprinkle over two-thirds of the nut mixture.
- 6
Add another three sheets of filo on top of the nuts, brushing each sheet with oil.
- 7
Arrange the apple slices over the final sheet of filo, leaving a 2.5cm (1”) border around the edges.
- 8
Sprinkle over the remaining nut mixture, then fold the edges of the filo up and over the apples. Brush the folded edges with a little more olive oil.
- 9
Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the filo is golden and crisp and the apples are tender.
- 10
Remove from the oven and spoon over the reserved syrup. Serve warm with vegan cream or vanilla ice cream, if you like.
